CHAPTER 12

WORKING WITH CHILDREN

WITH CONDUCT DISORDERS

EDITOR’S COMMENTARY:

In this selection focusing on children, Ellis addresses issues such as lying, stealing, bullying, and delinquency. He makes some reference to why deviations represent problems and provides examples. This selection was written about four years before the Living School was established at the Institute, with the goal being to incorporate rational thinking into the curriculum. In the chapter summary, Ellis argued that one could try to change a child’s environment or one could try to change his or her perceptions of the environment. No matter how difficult it might be, Ellis argued that it would be worth trying to change a child’s perception of his or her world whenever possible. This often proved to be difficult as children regressed to behavior that had been well learned, even though that behavior might have produced results that often were at odds with the powers that be.
